At Phāea we love sharing our personal story with our guests in every part & every corner of our hotels.
At Cretan Malia Park, you can explore the enchanting art exhibition “Womanhood Threads and Traces” where the rich tapestry of Cretan hand-woven textiles unfolds. This isn’t just an exhibit; it’s a celebration of tradition, craftsmanship, and the extraordinary legacy of Agapi & Costantza Sbokou’s grandmother, the late Agapi Sbokou (1914-2007).
In the rhythmic dance of the loom, the sisters’ grandmother wove not just fabrics but stories – threads of tradition passed down through generations. Each textile on display at Womanhood Threads and Traces is a testament to the enduring craftsmanship of Cretan weavers, an art form where history is spun into every intricate pattern. As she poured not just skill but love into every creation, her legacy lives on in the meticulous details of the exhibited textiles, each stitch a nod to the dedication and passion that defines Cretan craftsmanship.
One of thread’s properties is to connect and bind together different objects. Agapi Sbokou assembled and helped the women in her region to access the job market, thusly keeping the Cretan art of weaving alive from the 1950s all through the 1980s.
Cretan weaving is a symphony of colors and textures, an ancient art that breathes life into cloth. The exhibition showcases the mastery of this craft, highlighting the vibrant hues and intricate designs that echo the spirit of Crete. From the loom to the exhibit, each piece is a journey through time, connecting past and present in a seamless weave.
